Positive Behavior Intervention & Supports (PBIS)

New Tech Institute, like all New Tech schools, has a core focus of Project-Based Learning in an atmosphere of Trust, Respect, and Responsibility (TRR). We have few discipline issues at NTI because of our focus and daily reminder of TRR.

Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS) is a way of managing school behavior and discipline that creates a positive, nurturing school environment. Teachers teach students how they are expected to behave within the school environment - in the classroom as well as in the hallways, cafeteria, bus, and other areas. As students do well, school staff acknowledge the behavior to encourage the behavior to continue. We want to make sure students know our expectations ahead of time to prevent behavior issues before they happen.

We use a level system at NTI. All students start on "charcoal" level, which is named for one of our school colors. Students can earn commendations for actions going above and beyond the normal expectations, and they can earn Fish Cards for smaller acknowledgements. Students with multiple commendations will have periodic acknowledgments throughout the year.

Low-level referrals are for minor behavior incidents in the classroom or elsewhere in the school. If a student accumulates five low-level referrals, privilege limitations begin; however, a student can earn one commendation to counteract one low-level referral.
